Most dice games just ask you to roll. This one hands you a cleaver.
On November 9th Goose Games is sharpening our knives for Diced Veggies, a dice-slicing cooking game designed by Josh Cappel, Jory Cappel, and Rowan Cappel and published by KTBG.
You’re a chef in a busy kitchen, chopping fresh ingredients and turning them into dishes from around the world. Carrots, mushrooms, onions, peppers, and tomatoes are all represented by colorful dice, and Claire Lin’s food illustrations are good enough to make you hungry. Luckily, 2 Row’s kitchen will be open.
How It Plays
All 35 ingredient dice are rolled and packed into a tight grid called the block, which sits between the players like a shared chopping board. On your turn, you do three things:
- Cut. Slide the cardboard cleaver into a seam from the outside edge of the block and push away a chunk of dice. The numbers on the dice you push can’t add up to more than 10, and the block has to stay in one piece.
- Cook. If your dice match the ingredients on one of your Recipes, serve it up. You can add a Hype card for bonus points if your dice meet its requirements, like reaching a certain total or showing all the same number.
- Card. Draw a new Recipe or Hype card, then pass the cleaver.
Here’s where it gets spicy: the dice you need are rarely the dice that are easy to reach. High numbers eat up your 10-point limit fast, and every cut changes the shape of the block for the next chef. You can only hold eight dice, too, so hoarding isn’t on the menu.
If you’re stuck, your Chef token can change the type or number of one die. It’s a one-time fix until someone restocks the block, but it can turn ordinary Stuffed Peppers into Stuffed Peppers That Will Knock Your Socks Off.
How You Win
Once a chef finishes their final Recipe, everyone else gets one more turn. Add up the stars on your cooked Recipes and Hype cards, and the highest score earns top billing in the kitchen.
Why You’ll Love It
- It’s a great first game. It’s easy to teach, and you’ll be chopping within minutes.
- It feels fantastic. Nudging a row of dice with a tiny cleaver is ridiculously satisfying.
- There’s more than meets the eye. It looks simple, but choosing the right cut is a tasty little puzzle.
- It won’t eat up your whole night. Games take about 30 minutes, so there’s plenty of time for seconds.
Come get your slice of the action this Monday at 2 Row Brewing in Midvale. Doors are open to everyone (ages 21+), no experience is required, and we’ll teach you how to play. Featured games also earn you bonus raffle tickets, so playing Diced Veggies could really pay off.
